Arts on Grand is offering a Kid’s Valentine Fun Class from 1 pm to 2:30 pm. The class will be taught by Terry Mugge, and is open to kids aged 6 to 12 years. They will make valentine school boxes; homemade valentines for school, friends, or family; and a valentine snack. The cost is $6 per child. Space is limited. Call 262-4307 to sign up.

The Terril Kiwanis Club will be hosting a “Fun Night” on Saturday Evening. The event will be held at the Terril Library / Memorial Building. There will be a drink supper from 5 to 6:30 pm with a menu that includes Maid rites, baked beans, chips, dessert and a drink. A live auction will follow. Around 7 pm there will be Bingo. All monies raised will be used for the Terril Community / Memorial Building improvements. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will provide financial assistance.

Spirit Lake High School will be hosting the Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Choir Festival on Monday, February 6, from 2:45 PM to 9:00 PM at the Sami Bedell Center for the Performing Arts. Public is welcome to hear some great vocal jazz music. Admission will be $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for students. Participating high school jazz choirs will be Akron-Westfield, Alta-Aurelia, Algona, Central Lyon (Rock Rapids), Forest City, Harris-Lake Park, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Kingsley-Pierson, Okoboji, Sheldon, Spencer, and Spirit Lake.

From 11 am to 1 pm at the Spencer Golf & Country Club is the host of a Muscular Dystrophy Association fund raiser where local community leaders will be “arrested” and put behind bards and business associates will post “bail” to get them released. During the Spencer Lock Up all dollars raised will go toward sending Iowa children with MD to summer camp at Camp Courageous in Monticello, IA for a week of limitless fun.

The St Joseph High School Youth Group is hosting a live auction starting at noon in the Parish Center at St Joseph Church, Milford. Included on the auction will be hundreds of boxes of household items and furniture contributed by parishioners, gift certificates and shopping cards for restaurants, snow removal, car washes, pizzas, mystery cash, lodging, wine, boat storage, pontoon rental, gas golf, tickets for the Hawkeyes vs Central Michigan football game Sept 22, 2012, sides of beef and much more. Doors will open at 7:30 am. A lunch stand will be available. Proceeds from the auction go to the High School Youth Group mission trip to Malawi, Africa, in July.

The first installment of the 2012 Area Student Art Exhibit is now up at Arts on Grand in downtown Spencer. This year, the show has been split into two halves separated by another exhibit. The first half, which features art by preschool and elementary students, runs through February 10. The second half will run from March 13 through April 6, and will feature art by middle school and high school students. Art by students in Spencer’s public elementary schools and Sacred Heart School will be on display from January 27 through February 10. There will be a reception for them from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, January 28. Student artists and their families and friends are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served at both receptions, and the public is welcome to attend. This year marks the fifth consecutive year that Farmers Trust and Savings Bank of Spencer has sponsored the Area Student Art Exhibit.

The tale of the humble, young girl who goes from an underprivileged maid to an elegant princess is loved by many, from adults to children alike. In the Enchanted edition, the story of Cinderella will create warmth and charm, from the hilarious stepsisters to the moment when the slipper fits.

Iowa Lakes Community College is having a spring musical Cinderella (Enchanted Edition). Performances will be March 29, 30 and 31, 2012. Audition dates are scheduled for February 2 and 7, in room 72 at the Estherville campus. Children will audition at 6 p.m., adults at 7 p.m. Those interested need only attend one of the audition dates. “We need a large cast with at least 6 men and 6 women with an unlimited number of chorus members, including children, teenagers and adults,” said Carol Ayres, Professor of Music.

Arts on Grand will present a concert by two recent Spencer High School alumni on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Old High School Auditorium. The concert will feature Isaac Brockshus playing solo piano and also accompanying singer Kim Steffen. This is the first of a planned series of annual winter concerts featuring Spencer High School graduates who have gone on to make music their chosen profession. This special concert is sponsored by Del’s Garden Center and Steffen Furniture. Tickets for adults are $10 at the door or $8 prepaid at Arts on Grand. Student tickets are $5 at the door or $4 in advance.

The Spencer Library has scheduled their next movie on February 1st at 6:45. We will be showing "Courageous". Since this movie is a little longer it will begin the feature at 6:45. As always the feature is free and includes popcorn, pop and snacks.

Arts on Grand is offering a three-session workshop on memoir writing starting Saturday, January 14. “From Memories to Memoirs” will be conducted by Arla Kintigh, who taught English, rhetoric, journalism, and speech for over thirty years. The other workshop sessions will be January 28 and February 11, alternating with Arts on Grand’s writers group (which meets the first and third Saturday of every month). Each session will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers. The only materials required are paper and a pen or pencil. The Perspectives on the World Christian Movement is a Christian education course designed to help believers learn more about God’s heart for all nations and how we can play an active role in the Great Commission. It is run locally, coordinated regionally and supported behind the scenes by a national office. This dynamic class is offered in over 200 locations all over the world. The 2012 Perspectives Course will be held on Sunday nights at Hope Church in Spencer from January 8 2012 through April 29th.
